FrostWire is an open-source BitTorrent client first released in September 2004 that was initially very similar to Lime Wire. Over time, developers added more features, including support for the protocol known as “BitTorrent.” In version 5 of this software, it dropped its Gnutella network integration and became only available through BitTorrent. Another benefit for users that use FrostWire is that it can also act as a Media Player.
In the following tutorial, you will learn how to install the latest version of FrostWire on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa using a recommended Launchpad PPA repository to provide the most up-to-date version using the command line terminal.
Table of Contents
Update your Ubuntu operating system to ensure all existing packages are up to date to avoid any conflicts during the installation.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
Use the following command to install or check if the packages are installed.
sudo apt install software-properties-common apt-transport-https -y
Import FrostWire PPA
First, import the “xtradeb packaging” team PPA that contains the latest up-to-date version.
Use the following command to import the PPA as follows.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xtradeb/apps -y
Before running the installation command, run an apt update to reflect the new imported PPA.
sudo apt-get update
Install the software using the following command.
sudo apt install frostwire -y
How to Launch FrostWire
Now that you have the software installed, launching can be done in a few ways.
In your terminal, use the following command.
If you would like to launch and use the terminal simultaneously, send it to the background to continue using the current terminal.
However, this isn’t practical for desktop users, and you would use the following path on your desktop to open with the course:
Activities > Show Applications > FrostWire
The first time you open FrostWire, you will come across an installation wizard; this will go over a few steps such as accepting terms and conditions, agree not to use the program for malicious purposes and copyright infringements along with changing the default directory path, all standard stuff that any user can quickly configure.
Once the application has launched, you will arrive at your default landing screen.
How to Update FrostWire
The software should update by itself with your system packages for desktop users, using the APT package manager. For users that would like to check manually, use the following command in your terminal.
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
How to Remove (Uninstall) FrostWire
FrostWire, when installed, adds quite a few dependencies, so ideally, using the autoremove command is best to keep your system clean and not bloated.
sudo apt autoremove frostwire -y
Next, remove the imported PPA if you have no desire to re-install the software, the command will see the same as importing but with the
--remove syntax added to the command.
sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xtradeb/apps -y
